Founder's Statement>>. I am one of 48
children of my father. My family believed in ancestral worship and
did not go to church. We would participate in rituals and offer
prayers to the spirits before embarking on journeys and so forth. The
biggest problem was it was a loveless family life. My father was
spread too thin because of the many children and problems that arose
out of that. For some season I always wanted to go to church and at
first my dad would not hear of it. Eventually, somehow, he loosened
up and so began my search for God. I went to may different
denominations for some time before giving up all together.
It was afternoon of the 24th in November 1988 when, coming home from
school, I was introduced to Christ. I had become a bully at school
and this one guy was busy witnessing from the Four Spiritual Laws
booklet and when he saw me coming he thought I would come and disrupt
everything, but instead I ended up giving my life to the Lord.
I finished my school and went on to obtain an honors degree in social
work at a local university. During my university years I was
introduced to Athletes in Action (AIA). Being a good soccer player, I
fitted in and AIA bought a franchise in a local league and I started
getting training on how to witness to fellow players and how to make
my life a testimony. As time went by I felt God had indeed called me to
serve Him in this arena. AIA organized its first mission trip to
France in 1998 and I was a part of it.
In France, I met Philippe Berthoud, a former player with the
Charlotte Eagles, a professional Christian soccer team in the USA,
who felt I was good enough to make the Eagles team. The Eagles team
invited me on their tour of the Middle East in December of 1998 and I
went and took part in their tour. (Philippe is now the Founder and
President of Essex County United Soccer Club).
That tour created a relationship with Holy Land Trust who were
developing plans for a historic expedition dubbed the Journey of the
Magi a Pilgrimage for Peace. The director of the Eagles team referred
me to Holy Land Trust who in turn invited me to be a participant on
the Journey as a soccer player and as a representative of the
continent of Africa. At first I was not sure about going, as I had
just landed my first job since completing my degree program. After
praying and seeking God's face I chose to resign from my job of five
months and went to the Middle East where for three months I took part
in this historic event retracing the steps of the original Magi, a
trip that took us through Iraq, Syria, Jordan and Israel.
After the Journey I returned home where I took up sports ministry on
a full time basis. I was serving as the country leader for AIA. It
was during this time that I felt the Lord was calling me to start my
own ministry. Harvesters in Sport was born.
My first project was setting up a soccer league for churches and in
our first year we had 14 teams participate. It was a huge success. I
was working with a team of volunteers that I had gathered and some
who had left AIA to serve under me. Our next projects were soccer
camps and a basketball league. We have since expanded and are now
running CAMPS and have set up our unique ORPHANAGE MINISTRY. Our work
keeps growing. Praise God!

I was born on
the 18th of September 1980 out of a polygamous setting. I gave my
life to the lord in 1990 when I attended an A.W.A.N.A (Approved
Workmen Are Not Ashamed) meeting, which is a club for boys and girls.
Though I had given my life to the Lord my life was not easy.
Had many unanswered questions and growing up without a father’s love
gave me a negative outlook on life. Though born again I could not
fully grasp the Father’s love.
This kept me searching for more and them ore I searched the more from
God I drifted.
I found myself relying more on my own strength. After my high school
education ( A-Level), I went to work in Bindura, a town 86 kilometres
from Harare as an HIV/AIDS activist. I worked for Hope Humana People
to People. I enjoyed going out and meeting with people thought there
wasn’t total fulfillment in it. My turning point came in 2004, coming
form a drink up with a friend and driving under the influence of
alcohol we were involved in an accident. I remember reflecting on my
life on a hospital bed as I waited for the doctor to come stitch the
back of my head.
I thanked God for surviving and it became more real that we live on
borrowed time and our lives are not our own. I cried to God for
mercy. I had been in the light and knew the bible but there was never
commitment. It became apparent to me that the time to live for God
and be a witness for Jesus Christ the living God is now! I joined a
new church and became a member of the praise and worship team.
Having studied marketing I joined the marketing department of
Harvesters in Sport in 2005. I have been growing spiritually everyday
as more is required of me as a Christian. Because I am surrounded by
people who genuinely and constantly speak into my life, my life has
changed totally.
My spiritual life grows everyday as the search to know Him more and
the power of His resurrection .my intercessory life has picked up
immensely as praying for people is a part of my everyday life.
Harvesters in Sport to me is more than a workplace. It’s a home
where needs are met and lives changed. People are developed, talents
are identified and above all people meet with God.

I am the fourth
born in a family of five children. I was raised with Christian
principles and values, such that God has always been a part of my
life. Being an active participant at my local church and school
scripture union club made it possible for me to grow in my
understanding of the things of the kingdom of God. I then made a firm
decision to make Jesus Christ the center of my life.
On completion of
my degree (BSc (Hons) Molecular Science, OU UK), I wanted to take a
break from studies. I was not sure what my next strides would be but
one thing was clear, I wanted to continue to serve the Lord. When the
opportunity to work at HiS came, I took it. It has been a wonderful
experience and I am in awe of the level of impact we make in
children's lives.

I
am from a family of 7 and I am the fifth, 3 sisters and 3 brothers.
I am a
hyper active young man who enjoys the out doors. I love playing
soccer and any other cool sports apart from netball, which to me
isn’t a sport. I love meeting new faces, I dislike being in the
office I try by all means not to be in the office. Being with
children, playing, leaning and teaching them, one can say I lean a
lot from kids.
I am learning to
be a good Christian, for I am still to learn the true meaning of
being born again, being a Christian is an on going thing, which does
not happen overnight and I am enjoying leaning about it. My am in
life is to become a fire fighter because I love helping people and
that is the reason why I am working with H.I.S

Itai Gilmore Gurira on 9 August 1986, grew up an orphan, reborn
August 1999 into the family of God. I was born a leader that is I
attained every possible leadership position between primary school
and high school (prefect, senior prefect, head boy) including being
part of the junior parliament of Zimbabwe and a junior councilor with
the Harare City junior council. Then I was reborn a servant that is
what He has called me to and that’s where I find greatest joy.
At HIS I work with
and have worked with some of the most gifted and devoted people when
it comes to children ministry anywhere. I hope to give out as much as
I have gotten to my friends to all the kids I ever get to meet.

I am a young
man 24 years of age, born on the 6th of March 1982. 1 am the first
born in a family of 4. I joined harvesters in Sport in 2005 as a
field officer, prior to that having worked for Scripture Union and
Sanganayi Creek respectively from 2002-2004.
The turning point in my life was when I received Jesus as Lord and
personal Saviour in February 2000 whilst doing my A’ levels at Christ
Ministries High School. I had grown up going to church but I hadn’t
realized what it meant to accept Jesus as Lord and personal saviour.
My encounter with Christ took place at one of our scripture union
groupings at school and we had invited one Pastor Muchirahondo to
speak on that day. After his message I was left with this conviction
that for my life to be complete I needed to have a meaningful and
much more intimate relationship with Christ.
Ever
since I made that decision I have never looked back and joining
Harvesters in Sport has also helped me in my spiritual life as I
continue to move from glory to glory. I started of as a field officer
and my duties included marketing and running camps, and later on was
to become supervisor responsible for overseeing my fellow workmates
in our camps department and the training of volunteers. This year has been an eye opener
for me where I have seen God’s hand at work as from a peak of 9 camps
last year to 19 camps this far from January to August 31 2006. For me
it presents an opportunity to share my faith and preach the good news
of Christ to many children I have sought to make a difference in
their lives. I look forward to more and more of this these
opportunities to minister to as many children as I can reach to with
Harvester in Sport as the vehicle through which to achieve this goal.

old, working for HiS during this gap year, awaiting Varsity next year
(2008). I am the second born in a family of three. My hobbies are
reading, writing, talking, eating, and outdoor activities –
Abseiling, etc. I gave my life our Lord Jesus Christ on the 16th of

I have dedicated
my gap year to ministry, discovering my talent, purpose, and growing
in the knowledge of God. I am a member of the Leo Club International.
In high school - Westridge High, I was a member of the Harare Junior

Working with
children has challenged me as a person, because it has caused me to
be conscious of my character and behavior. I have learnt to care more
about kids and people, and become more discerning. I am also
challenged by the fact that I cannot preach what I do not practice.

YAMIKANI SAMANTHA BANDA (Field Officer)
Nationality: Malawian
I
grew up in the USA and I’ve always been a sports person. Both my
parents are athletic Christians and so are my two sisters.
I lived with my father in a Christian home for twelve years with my
two sisters. When I came back to Zimbabwe in December 1999, life got
a bit shaky and in Form 2 I felt it was time to re-commit myself to a
life with Jesus in my heart. I found I didn’t really seek or speak to
Christ when I was in all types of situations. Of course I read the
bible, loved the Lord, loved church and Sunday school, but I found
myself asking if that was it- was it enough? So I made a personal
commitment to Christ. It was more personal; a spiritual or emotional
altercation rather than a physical one. I seek God more than I used
to- anytime. Since then I’ve been able to realize where Christ has
worked in my life… not luck (I used to thank God for my good luck and
not His blessings).
I started working for HiS on 14 March, 2006, and I saw God’s hand
work in my life the day I came for the interview. For two months
prior I had been searching for something to do to keep me busy before
I go to school. In February I’d found an opportunity in the newspaper
and phoned in. The lady I spoke to told me to come in for an
interview and gave me the office’s location. I arrived in the
vicinity and spent thirty or forty minutes looking for the building
in question. I gave up and went home frustrated- yet I continued to
pray for God to deliver me from my boredom! I stayed unemployed for
another two weeks before Itai Gurira invited me to come for an
interview at HiS. So the following week I did and I felt it went
well. On the way home I happened to be looking up as I passed the
area where I had missed my other interview and I found the building
that had eluded me weeks before!!
I was once captain of my high school basketball team, I used to
participate in athletics, I was President of the Human Right’s Club,
President of the Debate Club, I was also in Interact and the Senior
Prefect’s body, and the icing on the cake was being Public Relations
Officer of Harare City Junior Council in 2004-5, the year we were
able to launch the Council website. I see myself as an achiever and
my encouragement to everyone to look up toward the Lord and He will
do great things for you too.
I am hoping to go to university and study Psychology,
possibly even Sports Psychology. No matter where I go though, I will
continue to pray for this great ministry that it may grow and grow.
God bless, may you too be empowered.

TANAKA MAGWATURE (Field Officer)
Nationality: Zimbabwean
I
am the first born in a family of four children. I was born on the 5th
of May in 1983. I grew up in a church going family, but I gave my
life to the Lord on the 17th of March in 2000 when I attended a
Scripture Union Meeting at Christ Ministries College. I was sixteen
years old. I had been suffering from Ulcers for almost 3 years and I
had developed a kidney problem. When I went into the S.U meeting, I
attended the meeting with my friends that day unaware of what God had
in store for me and my family. The pastor called me and prayed for me
and told me that I had been healed from Ulcers and the kidney pain.
He told me to go home and eat the food that the doctors had told me
not to eat, the following week I gave my life to the Lord. My family
was amazed at what had happened, but they thought my pains would
eventually come back.
When I gave my life to the lord a lot of things happened to me
during that year. I was very zealous about my new commitment, but I
had no one to guide me. I remember going to a life changing S.U camp
at the end of the year (Nov 2000). It was only after that camp that I
joined Scripture Union as a Young Adult. That month a vacancy came up
at Scripture Union for the position of a Torch Bearer, a friend asked
me to apply for the position, I was so excited though I didn’t know
anything about the job. I asked more about the post and I received a
book and tracts about Torch Bearers, I took the items home read about
it and the next morning I went to the S.U office to register myself
for the vacancy.
I worked as a Torch Bearer for a year then I left Scripture Union to
join the Travel Industry which I had studied after my O-Level. I
didn’t feel the same enthusiasm, as I did when I was working with
children at SU, so I joined the Children’s Ministry at Church. I felt
myself giving more on Sunday than every other day of the week. I
realised that God intended me to work with children as I enjoy
spending time with them. I also had a passion to fill the gap between
adolescence and puberty in young children as I felt no one was really
there for me during that time. I joined Harvester in Sport as a Field
Officer in September 2005 and I fulfilled my passion to work with
children in schools at camps and in orphanages.
Working with children has changed my life, both spiritually and
mentally. I pay attention to detail more than I used to and I believe
it has helped me to develop a 6th sense as I had to go through
certain trainings like child counselling. My Spiritual life grew as I
learnt to study my bible daily, and I developed an intercessory life
(for the children I would be praying for). I believe this is just the
beginning of my purpose to serve children as Christ serves the
Church. To me Harvesters in Sport is an avenue, where young people
like me are trained and groomed for life changing skills, and where
children of all ages meet with the Lord. Working at HIS has also
brought out my Spiritual gifts as I face different challenges
everyday.
