CAMPER MOTIVATION

Camps are a platform for those who are in cocoons to come out and become butterflies. As children mingle with one another in an "unfamiliar environment", they tend to show their true colors, helping them to reach out to other children. In our camping environments, everyone is equal and treated that way. This allows campers to realise that they are not alone in the things they go through everyday. They hence become more open and hopeful.

Insecurity, fear and anxiety are dealt with as we go through the day and night events. Change for a child can be in the form of watching others at meal time. Written by Oscar Manduku (Volunteer).

GET INVOLVED

Through out the year we participate in Orphanage programs and other community projects. We are extending an invitation to yours school. You can send your students on some of our missions, through their Interact clubs.

SAFETY AT CAMPS

We make it a point that each leader takes care of at most 10 campers. This reduces the risk of accidents, in that each leader is able to move around and monitor a manageable group. We always have a qualified First Aid person at every camp and school event.

We teach our campers basic firs aid at every camp, to reduce accidents risk. We have at least one life saver at the pool side, per ten campers, and make it a point to forbid camper to swim unattended. Our first aid kit is restocked before and after camp.

To ensure safety, every leader tries out the activity before allowing their group to follow, e.g. Camo Game, Abseiling, and Wall Climbing. We also have a stand by vehicle to carry injured persons to the nearest hospital if need arises. Written by Terry Nkhuwa (Field Officer).

SCHOOLS PROGRAMS

School ministry is about HiS going into schools to teach the word to school children as well as coordinating and training schools on camps like prefects training, environmental camps etc. in addition through our schools ministry we seek to bring in experienced Christian coaches from overseas who will train school teachers to be sports coaches and preach the word to them. Students thus benefit two fold; firstly they improve on their sports skills and most importantly get introduced to our saviour Jesus Christ.

THE GIRL CHILD AT AN HIS CAMP

The welfare of the girl child on camp is at the heart of every HiS counselor. Girls are housed separately from the boys at all camps. In the dormitories the children are monitored by female leaders who are at watch all the time to ensure that the children are happy. They also make sure that high levels of sanitation are maintained during camp.

Group activities ar
e conducted in unisex teams. This facilitates exposure of the children to the opposite sex and interaction at this level. A rule that forbids hugging and any form of sexually suggestive behavior is enforced. This measure was put in place in order to safeguard all children, but especially the girl child. It applies to both the children themselves and the camp leaders. Where adolescent children are in attendance this rule serves to discourage sexual misconduct. HiS is aware that cases of child sexual abuse have skyrocketed in Zimbabwe and it is our goal to ensure that our slate is kept clean in this arena.

The camp environment is designed to be different from home and to impact the child such that their time there is memorable. Life is seen in a different light and sometimes this prompts children to open up and reveal background issues that they would have otherwise kept bottled up. In the event that this happens during camp, utmost care is taken to ensure that the girl child receives appropriate counseling. We adhere to a same sex counseling policy. In most instances, depending on the gravity of the situation and on consent of the child, such cases are brought to the attention of the other authorities such as the school teachers or the parents during or after camp. If necessary and or possible, HIS will also conduct follow up sessions on such children.

HiS wishes to maintain the prevalence of a child friendly camping environment. We advocate protection of the girl child and seek to see any adverse situations rectified in the best way possible
