CURRENT ORPHANAGE MINISTRY WORK
(work with est. orphanages with a view to est. our own)
We are currently working with SOS Children’s Village and Harare Children’s Home. At SOS we are working with pre school, primary and high school kids. We run a two hour slot every Friday where our staff members take different age groups in classes. For preschoolers we do a bit of sports then provide art materials like boards and crayons so they get to draw and do coloring. We will get them to sing then read them biblical stories etc.
For primary school kids we have a sports slot, a sing a long then sharing of the word. When camps come along we get to sponsor a few youths. We have so far sponsored 12 kids to one of our camps and more will be catered for as we develop relations with other orphanages.
On Saturdays we run coaching clinics of three disciplines, namely, soccer, basketball and volleyball. Through this initiative we hope to inculcate in them basic sports skills to enable them to choose a sport they enjoy and perhaps pursue it for life. It is about talent identification and talent promotion. Through our talent identification exercise we may even discover potential national champions and role models.
Orphans are often marginalized and divorced from mainstream society thus after the basics we will also seek to have them play competitively with kids of their ages from different schools.
At Harare Children’s Home we teach kids scripture and sports every Friday afternoon. We utilize a two hour slot again. Work will soon be beginning at Chinyaradzo Children’s Home and it will be modeled along the lines of SOS and Harare Children’s Home.
For us development and recreation of the disadvantaged child are of extreme value. Through scripture teachings we hope to build self esteem and self worth. These virtues are usually battered by the simple fact of being orphaned and institutionalized. Sport gives them a chance to discover their talents and puts them on the same footing as regular children.
ORPHANAGE MINISTRY OBJECTIVES
Broad objectives of our orphanage ministry
a) To teach orphans the message of the cross
b) To help orphans develop their relationship with Jesus
c) To promote/generate sport interest amongst orphans
d) To use sport as a form of recreation for them
e) Utilize the camps strategy by offering part or full sponsorship so they attend our camps thus promoting their integration into society and help them to develop healthy relationships
f) To provide utilities (toys and sports equipment), school fees and uniforms to impoverished orphans as resources permit.
g) Help orphans identify sporting strengths and push for their development
h) Bring in foreign coaches and volunteers to work with the kids and do recreational activities and donate toys and equipment.
i) Lobby new orphanages to work with from time to time as resources enable
